Dark clad landmark building |
230 North Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60601 United States |
This imposing, dark, art deco tower has been looming over Michigan Avenue since 1929. Clad in an unusual dark green-and-gold terra-cotta facade, the building was fashioned to look like a champagne bottle, according to local legend. It is the alleged inspiration for the apartment building in the movie Ghostbusters, where the men battled the giant marshmallow man. Perhaps the building's most famous aspect is its designers. It was built by the Burnham brothers, sons of the Chicago architecture legend Daniel Hudson Burnham. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic and colorful neighborhood |
318 West Cermak Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States http://www.chicago-chinatown.com/ info@chicago-chinatown.com |
Although not one of the country's larger 'Chinatowns', the main drag on Wentworth Avenue is worth the brief side trip from the Loop for the curious. You will find an assortment of shops, restaurants and the butchers with skinned ducks hanging in the windows. Fueled by an influx of money from wealthy Chinese developers looking to diversify their holdings outside of Hong Kong, Chinatown is looking to expand its boundaries. A new shopping center was recently completed, and Chinatown has reportedly been put on the Mayor's list of neighborhoods up for urban renewal and redevelopment. Payment methods vary from store to store. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stirring World War I memorial |
2750 North Lakeview Avenue Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 773 929 2100 |
A hidden Chicago treasure, this historic Lincoln Park site has much to offer. Overlooked even by locals, the 1926 neo-classical rotunda was built as a memorial for Elks who died in battle during the First World War. On Sundays, tour guides are available to answer questions because the building raises many. Sculptures adorn the sides of the large dome, peering down at you majestically. Inside are a number of lavishly decorated meeting rooms, one featuring a beautiful table with gorgeous inlaid woodwork. Follow the curved hallway on the north end of the rotunda to the museum housing a fascinating collection of Elks' medals. The building is open to the public and admission is free. Mostaccioli heaven, and pizza, too |
730 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 951 0747 http://www.giordanos.com/ Giordano@giordanos.com |
Since its opening in 1924, by two brothers from Italy, this local favorite has received numerous prizes. It really is Giordano's famous stuffed pizza here, have no doubt. While this local chain restaurant has several locations, this is the biggest and best. The Mostaccioli here is more than simply tasty. Lasagna Florentine with Alfredo sauce also holds its own. Visit Chicago's most famous deceased |
4001 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60613-1903 United States +1 773 525 1105 http://www.gracelandcemetery.org contact@gracelandcemetery.org |
Established in 1860, this is Chicago's most famous cemetery and is on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Recall any important person in Chicago history, and chances are he or she is buried here. Notables whose final resting place is Graceland Cemetary include dept. store tycoon Marshall Field, architect Mies van der Rohe, and railroad inventor George Pullman. Some of the tombs, such as the Getty mausoleum designed by Louis Sullivan, are themselves works of art, complementing the lakes and statues. Take a tour offered by the Chicago Historical Society (+1 312 642 4600) or by the Chicago Architecture Foundation (+1 312 922 3432). Do not expect to see any spooks, though. Ghost legends are few and far between, as Graceland stands as an anomaly in this most haunted city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Greenhouse with tropical displays |
Koningslaan 48 Chicago, IL 1075 AE United States +1 312 742 7736 |
This indoor conservatory features greenhouses with tropical displays, divided into four areas—the Palm House, the Fernery, the Orchid House and the Show House. Built in the late 19th century, the site quickly became an attraction in the continually expanding Lincoln Park. While it houses several permanent exhibits, it also features many seasonal ones, including a popular Christmas exhibit. The gardeners take great care in planting and arranging their displays. A past exhibit included handcrafted miniature buildings and trains. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Outdoor Urban Fun |
222 North Columbus Drive Chicago, IL 60601 United States +1 312 742 1168 / +1 312 744 3370 (Event Hotline) http://www.millenniumpark.org/ millennium-park@cityofchicago.org |
Millennium Park is one of the newest additions to Chicago's many wide-open urban spaces, and is host to a range of indoor/outdoor activities for the entire family. You can listen to top musical events at the outdoor pavilion, or glide across the bustling ice skating rink come winter. The park is also home to some of the city's best public art, such as the interactive Crown Fountain, and the scene-stealing Cloud Gate, a mirrored sculpture situated in the middle of the plaza. For a scenic walk, take a stroll through the Lurie Garden, or wind your way along Frank Gehry's BP Bridge. For a bit of the park's history, be sure to take a peek at the Peristyle, a replica of the curving row of paired Greek columns that were on the corner of Grant Park near Michigan and Randolph from 1917 to 1953. Downtown lounging |
400 North Lake Shore Dr Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 747 0832 |
As the old real estate adage goes, the most important thing is location, location, location. Perhaps this is why this small beach attracts large crowds. Its proximity to Navy Pier, hotels and the posh Lake Point Towers keeps it a popular summer spot. The beach is also popular with triathletes looking to train for the aquatic portion of the race. Beware—the beach does not have bathrooms or a field house. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gothic campus, birthplace of the atomic bomb & breeder of Nobel Prize Winners |
5801 South Ellis Avenue Chicago, IL 60637 United States +1 773 702 1234 http://www.uchicago.edu |
The University of Chicago has done it all, from the birth of the atomic bomb to the first living-donor living transplant to the birth of sociological study. On a lighter note, Chicago's famous Second City comedy group was conceived at the UOC, and the nation's first Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger, ran the pigskin here. Former home of Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein, Milton Friedman and Saul Bellow, the UOC is rightfully proud that more Nobel laureates have studied or taught here than at any other university. The school was founded by the lakefront in 1891 and houses a richly detailed, gothic style campus. Take in one of many concert programs or events on campus, or take a stroll through scenic Hyde Park, the beautiful old neighborhood that engulfs the university. Review © 2007, Wcities |
